This week, the BBC announced that they are working on an upcoming animated virtual-reality special entitled Doctor Who: The Runaway, one that will feature the voice work of none other than Jodie Whittaker. Her involvement behind the scenes will help to get a little bit more credibility to the overall product, which should be available across many VR headsets over the coming months. The special is only set to run for about twelve minutes, but it could allow viewers to experience the world like never before. We have to imagination that there are generations of fans who have fantasized about being aboard the Tardis in some shape or form over the years; this will allow them to have more of that particular opportunity.

In speaking a little bit more about the upcoming VR special, here’s what BBC digital drama director Jo Pearce had to say:

“Fans will experience the TARDIS like never before in this thrilling new interactive story … As ever, The Doctor is full of warmth, wit and charm – helped by a wonderful performance from Jodie – which puts fans at the heart of the story as they immerse themselves in this beautifully animated world.”

We love the idea, just from the standpoint of creativity and fun. Also, if you have an entertainment property in 2019, it is important to be venturing outward to where you think a lot of the current generation of viewers are. There aren’t as many people anymore just watching live television; this is a good way to spread outreach and increase connectivity to the new iteration of the series.

Also, at least it does give diehard Whovians something more to look forward to while we all collectively wait for the new season of Doctor Who to come on the air. That’s not going to happen until 2020, so this is going to be one of the longer wait-times that we have endured within the modern era of Doctor Who as a series. There’s no confirmation as of yet regarding what’s coming in terms of a holiday special.
