Siren season 2 episode 5 preview: Is Ryn becoming TOO human?
Identity. That’s one of the main components to what Siren is. Who are mermaids in this changing world? Who are humans? Is it really so bad for characters to adopt traits from each other? It’s about assimilation in some ways, but also at the same time retaining who you are. There’s ultimately nothing wrong with characters working to figure out who they are and trying to live their best life, and that is all some of these characters are going to try to do moving forward.

Ryn continues to try to teach the other mermaids to be more human in order to better assimilate, but some are starting to resist her, causing Ryn to wonder if she herself is becoming too human. Maddie finds herself in a dangerous situation trying to help her mom. Meanwhile, Ben and Xander reconcile in order to work together to get the mermaid pack back into the water.
We focus so much on the Ryn storyline because it is, at least for us, the most fascinating. This episode is going to give us a great opportunity to explore more of how much the character has changed since the pilot. In the end, though, what she wants more than anything else is extremely important: The best for those around her. She’s just out to make her people safe, and these fellow mermaids have to understand that.
As for what else we’re getting to see, we hope that Ryn, Maddie, and Ben do get at least a small opportunity to spend some time together — their relationship remains one of the most fascinating parts of the show. It’s so fascinating, largely because we’re talking about characters who are fundamentally so complicated in terms of their feelings. Is this polyamorous, or is there a different endgame in mind? Hopefully, this becomes at least a little bit more clear as we continue to watch this season move forward.
