Consider this news that nobody should have been altogether shocked to hear — a Jack Ryan season 3 is coming to Amazon. Today at their TCA Winter Press Tour event, the company officially confirmed the news.
So why isn’t this news even remotely a shocker? Well, this series was set up from the start to be one of their biggest hits. It has a marquee star in John Krasinski, a huge marketing campaign, and also the attention of Tom Clancy fans from all over the world. Amazon knew from the start that this could be a huge, mainstream hit for them — which is something that they’ve been craving under the leadership of Jennifer Salke. Her goal is to turn Amazon’s streaming portal into something that can rival the likes of Netflix or HBO, and the big way to do that is to have some top-tier programming options.
The company also struck a little bit of gold with Krasinski. While they knew that he had some built-in celebrity stemming from his time as Jim Halpert on The Office, they had no idea likely that A Quiet Place would be the hit that it was. This has brought his star power to knew heights and they’ve got someone who can easily anchor this show for many more years to come.
Of course, you’re going to have to wait for a while now still to see a season 3, given that Jack Ryan season 2 is likely not on the air still for many more months. This is the second straight year in which Amazon greenlit another season before the current one premiered. It’s a tremendous show of confidence, and this is something that a lot of premium-cable networks often don’t do. A lot of times, networks like to see what they have before they give shows a green light for more, but Amazon’s been willing to be a little bit more daring. We imagine that a part of this is simply due to the heavy coffers that Amazon has — it can afford to take a few more risks with some of its programming and this move represents them embracing that fully.
