What makes a good chili? It’s a deeply philosophical question based on who you are and where you’re from — as a native Texan, we’re of the persuasion that good chili is sans beans and with a ton of heat. Luckily, it does seem as though Boden agrees with us at least on the heat part of things, judging from what he says at the end of the preview. Most of Firehouse 51 is assigned in pairs and they’re left to figure out a way to topple much of the competition. All of this is amusing, mostly in that every single person seems to think that they’ve got the ability to throttle the competition.

Of course, with that being said some members of 51 are a little more excited about their assigned cooking areas than others. Otis and Cruz, for example, seem to be none too thrilled that they are in one of the least-exciting places to cook out of anyone. They’ve all got until the evening in order to make the perfect bowl to take home the prize!

Is all of this silly? Absolutely, but we don’t need to see all of the characters fully immersed in super-serious stuff all of the time. We’re going to have a chance to see more serious content in this episode courtesy of Brett, Kidd, and Foster, who find themselves helping some bus-crash victims in Indiana. That’s where there could be some life-or-death stakes … though we guess there could be here if some of the chili is extremely awful in one way or another.

If there is ever an episode of Chicago Fire that will make viewers hungry, this could be it. Isn’t it also the perfect time of the year for chili? We think so, which is why we strongly recommend for some people out there to just sit back, relax, and grab a bowl before watching.
