Grammys 2019 opening: Camila Cabello, Ricky Martin, & more

Grammys

Tonight, 2019 Grammys are airing on CBS, and with that, Camila Cabello had the tough task of kicking things off. That’s a big challenge given that it’s the biggest music show in the world, and you want to do everything in your power to make sure that it starts off in a big way.

We’ll admit that as someone who remembers Camila first being on The X Factor in America years ago, this is quite a journey — going from obscurity to then Fifth Harmony (after a name change) to eventually becoming a solo artist with her own hits. While “Havana” wasn’t her first hit, it’s easily become her biggest one and, in turn, has allowed her to receive acclaim and performances at a number of big awards shows.

Given that this was the Grammys, though, the idea here was not to just have this be a typical performance from Cabello singing ‘Havana” — even if this is one of the biggest songs from the past several months. She had some help from a number of collaborators, including the legendary Ricky Martin sporting an awesome mustache and many others. There was some dancing, fantastic instruments, and really overall a great tribute to Latin music at large across multiple styles. There was a little bit of influence, some salsa, and a lot of passion.

You want to kick off a show like the Grammys with a ton of energy so with that in mind, there was so much to like about this from start to finish. It was fun, it was celebratory, and it really summarized some of the direction in pop music over the past few years. Also, we still have a feeling that Cabello will be on the Grammy stage in the future. One of the crazy things to remember here is that Cabello is only 21 years old! She’s really done more in the past two decades and change than some other artists have done in the entirety of their careers. The best is probably still to come, and we certainly do know that Ricky Martin could be doing some other super-exciting stuff coming up.
