The Blacklist alum star Ryan Eggold open to return in flashbacks

Is there room for The Blacklist to bring back Ryan Eggold at some point in the future? It’s hard to really imagine it happening, but the actor himself seems to be reasonably open to the idea.

Speaking in a new interview with TVInsider, Eggold — currently the star of New Amsterdam — made it clear precisely how he could see himself coming back for another run as Tom Keen:

I think that if it made sense for the story, and there was a moment in time that needed to be revisited in order to shed light on the present or the future, then, yeah, that would be interesting.”

As for whether or not we personally see it happening, there are always opportunities to flash back to different times of the show’s past — but with that said, are there any secrets still with Tom? What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? We think that it could prove worthwhile in a potential series finale almost as an echo of what the show once was, but it’s hard to foresee any other spot in which it’s viable. Tom’s been dead for a while, especially when you consider the time jump that came about after what happened to the character.

There’s also another issue that makes a big return for Eggold difficult — availability. He’s in a good percentage of the scenes on New Amsterdam and while the two film in the same city, it’s not exactly easy to jump from one show to the next. It’s something that requires proper scheduling and being really confident far in advance that Ryan is going to be available. It’s a lot of different things that need to be checked off in order for the gig to happen, and that’s why it is somewhat hard to envision a scenario in which it would.

For now, The Blacklist seems to be moving forward, and for good reason given that there is an awful lot on the show’s plate. Take, for example, getting to see a lot of dramatic stuff for Liz as she tries to figure out the true identity of the Imposter Raymond Reddington. Meanwhile, Reddington’s #1 priority right now is to figure out how to navigate his situation behind bars. Tom’s name has not even been uttered in a good while on the series.
