The Flash season 5: Where does Cicada stack up among Big Bads?

Flash season 4

Now that we’re a good ways into The Flash season 5, isn’t it a good time to start putting the season into a larger context — at least in terms of its villains?

While there are a number of great characters on the CW superhero series, we do remain very much convinced that the best seasons of this show are the ones in which the adversaries often take center stage. We need to see some fascinating opponents for Team Flash to square off against, given that they are in part what makes things interesting. What we gauge a good villain on is a number of different things, whether it be danger level, backstory, relationship with the main characters, and also whether or not they are entirely memorable after the fact.

5. Savitar – In terms of power, Savitar was terrifying — it’s the God of Speed! Yet, having it be a version of a future Barry Allen was a little bit muddled of a twist, and really, the entire storyline was basically a lesson for Barry to learn about the dangers of time-travel. Season 3 had its moments, but we won’t be remembering it because of its villains.

4. Cicada – He’s one of the creepier villains just in terms of how he operates, and we do appreciate that there is a personal reason why he does what he does — his adoptive daughter. Yet, it also feels like a lot of his battles are the same thing every time — the team finds a weakness with him and then he escapes. Cockroach is more of an appropriate name here, just because he never seems to die.

3. The Thinker – DeVoe certainly had his cheesy moments, but there was certainly something terrifying in how he was able to steal so many powers from so many different characters over time. He also did have a clear plan and was consistent for most of the season. We like him, admittedly, more than some diehard fans.

2. Zoom – He’s by far the most evil character we’ve seen on the show — he was psychotic, ruthless, and obsessed with power and adding to his arsenal of speed. He also did some horrible emotional things to Caitlin and we don’t take that lightly either … let alone murdering Barry Allen’s father Henry. We also love that he technically still exists in the form of Black Flash.

1. Reverse Flash – Is his motive (basically an obsessed superfan of The Flash turned evil) as great as some other villains? We wouldn’t go that far, but we do think Tom Cavanagh lifts this character to new heights and the hatred between Barry and Eobard is electric. Just seeing him back on the show for the season has lifted the story to new heights.
