Lethal Weapon season 4 could still have Damon Wayans, if it happens
At the moment, there’s no confirmation that we’re even getting a Lethal Weapon season 4. Yet, if we do there’s still a chance that the show could be bringing Damon Wayans back as Roger Murtaugh — despite comments from this past fall that he was leaving.
If we go back to those comments, there are a couple of things worth noting. For starters, Wayans apparently said them during an exhausting run on the show. Also, after he spoke about being a diabetic and also his long filming days, the production behind the scenes made some changes to accommodate that.. They were able to keep Damon on board for an extra two episodes beyond the initial thirteen that were ordered, and there’s a chance now that he could end up being around for a little bit more.
In speaking on this particular subject to reports are at the TCA Winter Press Tour today (via TVLine), Fox’s new programming head Charlie Collier tried his best to assure people that there weren’t any signs that Wayans and the producers were operating on anything other than the same page:
“Those comments predate me, but in speaking with the producers [and] with [Warner Bros,], I’m told that — and I think the show reflects it — that they’re walking in lock-step … I actually think that show has really hit its stride well.”
Of course, this suggests that there is a chance Wayans could be back, but there are some other issues to note here first. While Collier told reporters he is happy with the show’s recent performance, it’s still one of the lowest-rated shows on a network with a limited amount of time for programming. It has a better chance of coming back than The Gifted, but will there still be room for it, even with Gotham ending and the future of The Passage and The Orville still uncertain? We’re fairly confident about the future of The Resident, 9-1-1, Empire, and STAR, alongside some comedies like Last Man Standing and The Cool Kids.
Ultimately, we think that Wayans could return if he’s found a schedule with the show that makes sense and he’s comfortable with the work that it requires — but we’ve certainly come to expect almost anything with Lethal Weapon at this point. Nothing is altogether assured.
