Game of Thrones season 8 bosses on epic nature of battle scenes

Game of Thrones

If you’ve been following along some of the news out there on Game of Thronesone thing is probably already clear to most of us: The battles are going to be crazy. They are some of the most-ambitious sequences ever filmed for television, and we know that one battle, in particular, lasted for a record length of time of almost two months.

With a show like Game of Thrones, one of the main luxuries is that you do have a number of other benchmarks that have been set already when it comes to battle scenes. Take, for example, the showdown in The Battle of the Bastards earlier on in the show’s run. Meanwhile, we had the epic sequence of Hardhome that made the most of every single second that it was on TV.

Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, here is just a sample of what executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have around the bend for us:

“In terms of sheer scope, there is a lot in this season that outstrips the Battle of the Bastards sequence so expertly directed by Miguel Sapochnik … We can say this without feeling bad since most of [Season 8] was also expertly directed by Miguel Sapochnik.”

Sapochnik, through his work on the show, is probably going to be one of the most in-demand directors for some time, and we say that without even seeing these particular episodes. We do think that it is useful that there was a single person who directed a good chunk of the final season since that will help to give the show more of a specific flow and voice. That should prove very much fruitful when it comes to hammering out the series’ overall future.

New episodes of Game of Thrones are going to premiere in April, so you don’t have to wait that long in order to see some of these battles in action. We’re hoping for something that is intense, but also at the same time something that doesn’t feel like any other one we’ve seen. It would also be preferred if this wasn’t just violence for the sake of violence, and there is a specific reason behind every strike and movement within that battle, much like they do with the battles on Vikings. On the surface, it certainly does feel like there is one — we know that there is an epic showdown looming between most of the main characters and the infamous White Walkers. Everyone is going to have to unite; otherwise, it’s hard to imagine that anyone will be alive to battle for the throne at the end of it.
