MacGyver season 3 hasn’t necessarily replaced George Eads, but they have found an exciting way to shake things up following his exit.

According to a new report from Deadline, Levy Tran (Shameless, The Haunting at Hill House) is set to appear in a major recurring role as Desiree “Desi” Nguyen, a woman who will work alongside MacGyver and the rest of the Phoenix Foundation team on some of their missions. She will recur through the remainder of this season, which could set her up for a series-regular promotion in season 4. This move represents CBS and the show producers trying out the role with some optimism for her future alongside Lucas Till and the rest of the cast.

MacGyver did have some options following the departure of Eads. They could have gone with a rotating roster of new guest stars to fill Jack Dalton’s place in the team (the most-recent episode suggested a search was coming), or they could have opted instead for bringing back an assortment of familiar faces we’ve seen over the years. This is a show that has brought on a number of interesting people onto its roster, and there are certainly some, including Leanna and recently Bridget Regan’s role of Charlotte Cole, who we could imagine turning up on a number of occasions. Tran should prove interesting given that she is such new energy and hopefully, she’ll embrace and welcome the action of this show with open arms.

You’re going to have a chance to first see Tran on the show come Friday, February 15 — there are plenty of episodes left still this season for viewers to have a chance to get to know this character a little bit better. Let’s just hope that there are some fun spotlights for her throughout the weeks ahead and that MacGyver does end up getting a season 4 renewal. At the moment, we’re cautiously optimistic based on what we’re seeing with the numbers. This is a show that is remarkably consistent and has managed to withstand competition from both Blindspot and Last Man Standing, which posed a major threat this fall with its sizable audience.
