Good Trouble season 2, grown-ish season 3 renewals confirmed
So, what do we start the discussion with? Think in terms of Good Trouble, which was officially greenlit for a second season. Due to a California tax credit, it was long assumed that the show would bring the Maia Mitchell – Cierra Ramirez series (pictured above) back for more; yet, we have been worried as of late about the disappointing live ratings for the series. It probably is performing much better in a number of other measurements though, including DVR views and streams. We’re in an era now where streaming data matters more than ever, and in between some of that and the show’s young audience, the network clearly sees some hope for the future here.
As for grown-ish getting a season 3 renewal, the black-ish spin-off has shown itself to be a significant force on social media and is bringing in (at least so far) a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic for season 2. While it’s not necessarily lighting the world on fire in terms of its ratings, it’s showing some solid consistency following season 1 (it is down less than 13% in the demo, which is good retention for a network like Freeform) and there is a larger brand that it can be linked to down the line. While we’re not sure just how long grown-ish can really last in its current configuration and cast, it does at least feel like you could craft another couple of seasons out of it.
Freeform is in a spot right now where they are trying to bulk up more of their programming — in addition to these two shows, they also have on the air right now Siren and the second season of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger will be coming a little bit later this year. It is a little baffling that they’d want to end Shadowhunters given what they’re looking for from some shows that they have, but we’ve stopped trying to make sense of that particular move. If you like Good Trouble and grown-ish, there is a lot to be happy about here in terms of these two shows coming back. We’ll have a chance to talk more about their future in due time, but for now, go ahead and celebrate!
