Legion season 3 will be final season at FX

Legion season 2

Today, we come bearing some sad news for everyone who wanted to see FX’s Legion last a little while longer — it’s going to be wrapping up it’s story sooner then any of us wanted.

At the TCA Winter Press Tour event today, FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed to reporters that the upcoming third season of the Dan Stevens-led comic adaptation will be the final one. He also indicated (via TVLine) that this was always the plan for the show to last this long, and it is not being cut off because of some decision on the part of the network itself.

“Noah Hawley had always considered Legion to be a three-season show … and he has confirmed that he’s going to stick with his plan. This will be the final season.”

This does seem to be a case of perfect serendipity for Legion and FX as a whole. After all, we weren’t quite sure that the series would be long for this world in the first place due to the recent Disney – Fox acquisition — one that could be changing the superhero landscape as we know it. Our expectation here is that over time, we’re going to see a number of different comic-book characters reinvented and brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe one way or another. That’s why we wouldn’t be shocked if, in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, we ended up seeing a number of characters rebooted and brought into that world.

While the run for Legion on FX may not be extremely long, we do think that it’s made its mark. The critical consensus at the moment is that this is one of the best superhero shows of all time (and it really is), one that is dotted with excellent performances and twisted, thought-provoking stories from start to finish. There are very few superhero shows that shine a spotlight on mental illness and with David Haller we have someone who has a constant battle within himself over his super powers and his mental illness. We’re hoping that this continues moving into the third season and that we get to continue to see some of these characters push the envelope in some surprising ways.

Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to dive into Legion season 3 a little bit later this year — this is a show that continues to pack a lot of great content onto the screen from start to finish.

As for what else is coming from Hawley at FX, remember that he still has Fargo season 4 coming up down the line — led by Chris Rock, we imagine that there is going to be a lot of curiosity around what that show will bring to the table.
