Absentia hits one-year anniversary of US release! What’s next?

Most US viewers out there were likely waiting a super-long time in the first place to get season 1, largely due to the fact that it premieres in many other countries and territories first. The silver lining here was that American viewers did get all ten episodes at one — we can’t imagine the suffering for everyone who had to wait a good week between installments elsewhere. This show was as intense of a thrill ride as you’re going to find, and it had everything from a dark setting to a unique setting to fantastic breakneck cinematography that felt very much cinematic.
Now that we are one year removed from the series’ first-season launch, there is another question worth wondering: What’s next?
Well, for those who have not heard, there is a season 2 coming — not only that, but this said season is already wrapped! Production took place across a handful of months in late 2018, with production doing what it could in order to keep its spoiler cards close to the vest. With this show being so much about surprising twists and secrets, that is clearly something that they want to preserve for as long as they can. We know several cast members were back for filming, whether that be Stana Katic as Emily Byrne or many of the other people in her life in season 1. There may be a new mystery that involves somehow her past — or, at the very least, the aftereffects of the trauma she endured.
The safe bet, for now, is that Absentia season 2 will premiere at some point in 2019, though there are questions about the release date. It will be once more on Amazon in the United States, and our personal hope is that we get it at some point in either summer or early fall. That will allow the show a chance to air in some other countries first, provided that studio Sony wants to hold to a similar sort of airing structure that they had for season 1.
