Is Saturday Night Live new tonight on NBC? A look ahead

In theory, it does — but unfortunately, it’s not actually happening. There is no planned episode tonight, and we do wonder to a certain extent if it has to do with NBC not having the Super Bowl this year. We have seen them have a new episode the night before the big game in the past on nights in which the network actually has it.
So when will SNL return to NBC with new episodes? Think in terms of next week, which is when you’re going to see a fascinating new episode, one that will feature the return of Halsey — this time as both a host and musical guest. This is not something that the show has done this season so far, and it’s an interesting move to have it for someone in Halsey who is still reasonably new to the pop-culture zeitgeist. She’s a gifted performer, but we’re not sure older viewers who have all that much of an idea as to who she really is. In that way, this gig for her is almost like an introduction-of-sorts into most of the SNL fandom. We do think that they wouldn’t have hired her unless they were super-confident that she could deliver the goods, and that is one of the biggest things to really hope for entering next week. We do think that there is going to be a lot of quality comedy ahead.
As for the week following this one, the upcoming installment on February 16 is going to feature Don Cheadle as the host! That was recently announced, and we certainly do think that this could lead to a lot of laughs. Cheadle is an accomplished comedic performer (see House of Lies) and we definitely think that there is so much more he can bring to the table beyond what we’ve had a chance to see so far. We just hope that this episode gives him material that really allows him to do a wide array of different things. That’s the challenge with some hosting gigs — it’s really all about the script more than the quality of the performer.
