Why did Chelsea Peretti leave Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Actress explains
For the past few months, the simple assumption here was that the super-busy Peretti was departing because of some other projects. Yet, it turns out that there may have been an alternative reason why the exit happened. Here is what Peretti herself had to say on the subject to TVLine:
“[It] wasn’t fully just my decision. It’s hard to get into the weeds of what exactly transpired and how it all shook out, but it kind of came together to be this timing that presented itself. So I kind of knew that it was going to be happening for a while… [and was] holding on to this feeling of, like, ‘I’m going away from this family’ in my head.”
“…[But], if you talk to anyone in acting — we didn’t even know if the show was going to be renewed or not — you’re always thinking [about] what’s going to happen in your life. It’s the endless twists and turns of show business, and this is kind of how it wound up evolving…”
If you are to read between the lines, then it may have been a business-related departure for her from the show; regardless, we know that she’s coming back for at least one more episode and beyond that, she is going to be just fine with the rest of her career. She’s one of the funniest people out there and we wouldn’t actually be surprised if, in a couple of years, she had her own show somewhere either on broadcast or scripted television. That’s one of the joyous things about being on a show like this for so many years: You build a really loyal following, and that often does turn into some other gigs elsewhere. We certainly also know that there’s a great reputation of actors from Mike Schur-produced shows going on to do other great things. Look at the careers of Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman after Parks and Recreation for a good example of that.
Obviously, we’re going to miss Gina on Brooklyn Nine-Nine just because she had such a different energy than the rest of the cast. She was also so mysterious much of the time with her life outside of the precinct. Some of the random quirks about her life were among the best parts of every single episode.
