All American season 2 renewal still in play at The CW
Earlier today, The CW renewed the vast majority of their schedule, and the freshman football drama is really the only show that they have not greenlit for an additional batch of episodes. What’s going on here? This is basically just an issue of, for now, the network not getting the ratings that it needs from the series in order to greenlight it for more. This is the lowest-rated freshman series that the network has, and even its DVR ratings are much lower than some of the other shows that it has.
Speaking at the TCA Winter Press Tour about the renewal today, here is what network programming head Mark Pedowitz had to say (via Deadline):
“We are extremely proud of that show. We think the production quality is up there with Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend … It has nothing to do with the show. We’re going to sit down in May and determine the wants and the needs are about that moment. It’s positive. It’s a show I’m proud to support.”
One of the key factors in the future of All American may just be seeing what some of its performance is like on Netflix when it premieres there this spring. The CW has a really good relationship with the streaming provider where many of their hits arrive there early. This allows them a pretty wonderful opportunity to be able to get these shows out quickly, which in turn makes it easier to build audiences for future seasons. Pedowitz noted that Netflix has been a huge asset to some of their shows before, whether it be ones like Supernatural or more recently Riverdale. It could do the same here and viewers could find and really embrace the show … which in turn could help its season 2 odds.
Do we think that the network would love to bring it back for more? Sure, but if you love All American, we would say that now is the time to start watching live, if you aren’t already. This may be the only thing to ensure that it sticks around for good. It’s currently a toss-up, and we imagine that it is going to stay that way for a good while moving into the future.
