Fuller House renewed; season 5 to be final season

Fuller House

CarterMatt was wondering just earlier this week about the status of a Fuller House renewal, and now here we are delivering some admittedly-bittersweet news.

The positive thing worth noting here is that Netflix has officially greenlit a season 5 of the Full House revival; however, we’re also now hearing that this will be the final season of the show. Given how there were at one point reports that season 4 could be the show’s last, just getting a season 5 is a victory in its own right. Comedies on Netflix don’t tend to have super-long lives — Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, for example, recently wrapped up its own run (though it may come back for a movie down the road).

When Fuller House first launched on Netflix, it was considered for at least that first season to be one of the biggest comedies anywhere on television — and understandably so. This was a show that could bring a family brand of comedy to a new generation of viewers; some viewers who were kids when the original came out could watch the new version with their own kids. While Netflix doesn’t puiblicly release viewer figures, perception suggested that the viewership likely faded over the course of it’s run, as it often does for revivals. The important thing here though, is that Fuller House was still able to get enough viewership and attention to keep going for at least one more batch of episodes.

As for when Fuller House season 5 will actually premiere on Netflix, think at some point later this year. We don’t think that Netflix wants to delay things longer than that, and this does keep our hope alive of the show ending things with a DJ/Steve, Stephanie/Jimmy double-wedding. While some shows would consider that a little bit hokey and over-the-top, it’s basically the fundamental spirit of what Fuller House as a series is. This is a world that is built on a lot of silly comedy and idealism, and we do think that the writers are going to want everyone to be happy at the end of the road.

Of course, with this being the last season this will enable everyone to prepare for a future, and go off and start to think about some other opportunities. We do hope that some of the cast gets some other chances to show what they could do — it’d be interesting to see many of them try something out that was not in the typical sitcom space.
