In the sneak peek below for this upcoming installment, you can see James Spader’s character make it clear to Liz Keen that he is willing to pause some of the current legal proceedings that are out there in order to deal with a case. To be specific, he wants her to look into what happened to a prominent billionaire who was recently murdered. Why? He feels like it has something to do with him being locked up. There is a ripple effect that comes from him being in prison. He ran a vast criminal operation and without him, people are left to fend for themselves. That means that some criminals may be getting targeted in a way in which they weren’t previously. It also means that there are more people who could die without the protection of his organization.

There is a risk factor that comes with Reddington focusing on this, mostly in that doing it could lead to him not getting the face-time in front of the judge that he needs to help validate his immunity agreement. It does make you wonder how badly Reddington really does want to get out of prison? Our feeling is that he is eager to get to the other side, but he doesn’t want to disrupt anything on the outside world just for the sake of his trial. He’s a smart guy and can always find another way to deal with matters in the courtroom.

For Liz, she obviously has to walk a thin line anytime that she talks with her fake-father. She recognizes that she needs to keep up the act of concerned “daughter” — that way he doesn’t catch on to her secret, or the fact that she is the one responsible for him being behind bars in the first place. It’s good for him to stay behind bars so that she can work her investigation into his true identity … but she certainly does not want him to know all of this. She has to keep her cards close to the vest, given that he is smart enough to detect deception. We just wonder if he has on blinders when it comes to Liz because of their relationship, or if he knows more about what she’s doing then he’s letting on. he may also be playing his cards close to the vest since this has long been his way.
