Fuller House season 5 renewal: Is there still hope?
So, is there still hope for renewal at Netflix? As of earlier this month, the cast and crew were still hoping for more — that’s a sentiment that was expressed by executive producer Bryan Behar on Twitter a week and a half ago. Story-wise, we certainly know that there is room for more given Stephanie’s engagement at the end of the season and the possibility to see more of DJ and Steve together moving forward.
While we’re not sure we foresee Fuller House being the sort of show that lasts another four seasons at Netflix, it definitely does feel like there’s at least room for another 13 episodes. Don’t we have to see some weddings? We still think a double wedding of Stephanie/Jimmy and DJ/Steve would be fun.
One of the reasons for the growing concern over the future of the sitcom stems from reports from late last year suggesting that the streaming service was looking towards canceling the show after a fairly strong run on television. As strange as it may seem, we’re actually starting to wonder now if that negative bit of news will actually turn out to be positive. It is generating discussions regarding the future of Fuller House that were perhaps not happening by the show’s fans otherwise, and it may have added more of an incentive for them to continue watching.
Another reason to be afraid? Netflix’s recent history overall when it comes to series being canceled. As fans of Daredevil, Iron Fist, or Everything Sucks! know what it is like having your show meet an untimely end. Nobody wants that to happen here and it doesn’t feel like Netflix is the safe harbor for TV shows that it once was. The sentiment around the series is certainly a little bit different now — there’s a larger sense of mortality, and that this is an overall product that may not be on the air forever.
Overall, we do think that Netflix will finalize their decision regarding a Fuller House season 5 at some point over the next month or two. They don’t really have more time than that if they want to get a fifth season on the air at roughly the same time of the year. We don’t think the release window should be shifted here since this is clearly a time in which things work rather well for the series as a whole.
