Siren season 2 premiere ratings off to solid start

Siren - Freeform

For those who were curious about how the Siren season 2 premiere would fare on Freeform, we’ve now gotten a pretty good sense. Not only that, but most viewers should be pretty satisfied with the result.

Overall, the first episode of this season ended up generating a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also over 700,000 total live viewers — these numbers are down from the series premiere last year, but at the same time the total-viewer figure is up a good 7% from the season 1 average.

Here’s another impressive stat — the season 2 premiere generated the show’s best overall live audience since the two-hour series premiere, which is when Siren brought in almost 900,000 total viewers. This is the sort of powerful finish that makes you pretty optimistic in the show’s future, largely because it does signal that there are some people who may have caught up on the show in the hiatus, liked it, and are now deciding to watch live instead. Getting that sort of commitment and avoiding huge year-to-year declines is one of the best ways in order to ensure you can stick around in the long-term.

While we are celebrating the performance of Siren at present, we are doing it while also being acutely aware of one other thing — we are still pretty early on in the game and there is a lot of time left still for things to go sideways. We don’t want to get overly optimistic about anything at the moment when there are so many reasons to think that the ratings will decline in the weeks ahead — they tend to do for most shows after a premiere. If Siren manages to stay fairly steady, then you can chalk it up as a lock for a season 3 renewal. Freeform typically doesn’t rely only on live viewers when making their renewal decisions, but after seeing these numbers, it will certainly make things easier.

One thing that it does still have going for it? Uniqueness, given that there are not too many shows out there that are doing anything close to what it is on the air. It’s got a stamp that separates it from the field and a subject matter that surprisingly has not been played out all that much just yet. Maybe the recent success of Aquaman helped the show in some capacity, but we like to think of the two as separate entities.
