Ray Donovan season 7: Why it shouldn’t be the final season

Ray Donovan season 6

We’re almost two weeks removed now from the end of Ray Donovan season 6 and it should be said, first and foremost, that we miss it. That’s why we want to do what we can in order to look towards the future.

So is it possible that Ray Donovan season 7 could be the final one on Showtime? We are at this point of the show where you do have to start asking these questions and for good reason! Typically, premium-cable series last seven or eight seasons at most; Shameless, which is in season 9, is a little bit of an aberration that way.

First and foremost, we should note that Ray Donovan could end up lasting however long the creative team and the cast wants it to. If Showtime doesn’t force anyone to make a decision, they can figure this out on their own. We do think that there’s enough gas in the tank for at least a couple more seasons — mostly because of the fact that season 6 ended with so many interesting possibilities. For starters, could Bridget be more involved in her father’s life? What’s going to happen with Mickey? Can Ray really build a life for himself in New York City? There are still so many questions worth wondering and we’re hoping that there is a chance for some complete redemption here.

As for the show’s ratings, our assumption is that the series is certainly still successful — it’s just harder to judge it based on the numbers that are publicly available. The majority of people who watch Ray Donovan are not doing it live. Maybe they’re watching it via the DVR, or maybe they are checking it out On-Demand or via the app. Some may be watching it months later. The reviews from critics are also still there, and that means that the positive perception of the series isn’t going to be going away in the near future.

So, for now, what we’re hoping for is that the momentum just keeps going for Ray Donovan, and that if the show ever does end, everyone knows about it far enough in advance to come up with a fitting conclusion. For the time being, we’re cautiously optimistic that there will be at least one more beyond season 7 — and there really should be given that the quality and the numbers are there.
