The Conners season 2: John Goodman on still-uncertain future

During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, John Goodman made it clear that they are in a rather interesting holding pattern when it comes to the show’s future — it is in contrast to what they went through in 2018 with Roseanne, where it was pretty clear in the early going that they would be coming back for more episodes:
“They haven’t told us yet [about the future] … I’m waiting to find out what’s going to happen. They usually tell us, like last year it was the second show they said, ‘You’re gonna get picked up again.’ And they’re just [like this time], ‘We might tell you, we might not.'”
So why is there such a holding pattern when it comes to the future of this show? A lot of that doesn’t have to do with the success of the show — The Conners did very wen for ABC this fall, and it is the network’s top-rated comedy. The only reason for the wait is contractual; they have to find a way to get the cast locked in and then after that, determine just how many episodes the show is going to be moving forward. We’ve heard that the second season could be a little bit longer — think in terms of thirteen.
Overall, it does feel pretty-clear at the moment that things will work out — there really isn’t any hurry for the network to make an announcement here. Typically, May is the deadline for most shows, and we could see ABC announcing things early even if the cast isn’t completely set — providing that they are conflict. Getting that renewal out there is just a great way for viewers to be confident, and it would also quiet some of the people who were critical of the series from the start.
