Game of Thrones season 8: Lena Headey on filming final episodes

Game of Thrones

As you prepare for the Game of Thrones final season a little bit later this year, who doesn’t love a new TV interview here and there featuring one of the show’s cast members?

The one that we’ve got below comes via Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and it features none other than Cersei Lannister herself in Lena Headey. She, like everyone else aboard the enormous franchise, has had an incredible run — but it’s also one that has formally come to a close now. She’s had to say goodbye to being able to play this character, and she talks in the video about it being an emotional process. She discusses getting the scripts, going to the end in order to find out if her character makes it or not (we shall see on that!), and then also getting together with the rest of the cast for a table read in order to read out all of the lines.

What’s also interesting about this interview is that you get a sense of how much creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss care about the show’s cast, as they gave a number of speeches about each person near the end of production. While she seemed to be doing okay handling her emotions for much of the process, this was apparently the thing that pushed her a little bit over the top. It’s hard to say goodbye to a show like this and playing a character so memorable, even if you are ready to move on and do some other things in your career. This is probably the biggest thing that the majority of the cast will ever do, and it also just encompasses such a large percentage of your life.

We suppose that for Lena, one of the things that is an asset for her is that she doesn’t look all that much like Cersei in person, which gives her the chance to be able to go out and be relatively indistinguishable in real life. She probably has an easier time here than someone like Peter Dinklage or Kit Harington, who are both so distinctive that they probably are recognized every single second of their day for some of their work.

Be sure to watch the full interview, as there are some particularly-funny moments — including one in which Headey opens up about moving back in with her parents for a year and what sort of childhood she had growing up with them.
