NCIS season 16 spoilers: Robert Wagner returning as DiNozzo Sr.

NCIS

It looks as though NCIS season 16 is going to give viewers a healthy dose of one Anthony DiNozzo Sr. before the end of the season.

In a post on Twitter, series regular Wilmer Valderrama confirmed that we’re going to be seeing Robert Wagner return as Tony’s father at some point over the next several episodes. (Typically NCIS is at least a few episodes ahead in production.) Even though Michael Weatherly departed the show more than two years ago in order to do Bull, the series has continued to find a way to include Senior in the show. He’s someone who serves as a good bridge to Tony, given that Weatherly is busy with his other show to come back to NCIS, and he brings a little bit of insight and perspective from a world outside the NCIS offices.

One thing we do wonder with the return of Senior is simply this: Could the Sherlocks be back in some shape or form? The private investigator group now has him in the ranks, and the appeal with them returning is simply the show getting to bring back a number of familiar faces.

In general, it feels like the past is something that NCIS season 16 is happy to dive into a lot over the next several episodes. When the show returns on February 5, for example, there’s going to be a storyline that focuses heavily on the past of Ziva David. Meanwhile, CarterMatt reported earlier today that the February 12 episode is going to revolve around McGee heading back to his old high school. The thinking at the moment with the show now seems to be to make it as character-focused as possible, while also still delivering interesting cases. The reason so many people have stuck around for so long is because they care about the people, and clearly the producers behind the scenes don’t really want to see that change in the near future. The more that they can push things forward in this direction, the better off that NCIS is going to be down the line. Rest assured, we feel very confident that we are going to get another season — that feels like close to a sure thing at the moment.
