Ray Donovan season 7: Does the show need another big name?

Unfortunately, Ray Donovan is now over. To go along with that, we’ll be waiting many months until season 7 premieres. There is still a good bit to discuss in the interim, though, including whether or not the Showtime series should go ahead and start looking at some other additions to the cast following the exit of one Sam Winslow from the world.

The merit of casting Susan Sarandon on the show was clear — if you are a producer, you don’t balk at the chance to cast a big-name performer on your show. It brings you extra attention, and it also adds to the buzz that is very much already there. Sam wasn’t always the most-likable character, but you can say the same thing about many other people on the series — including Ray himself! She added dimension and drama to the series and there’s nothing else we would’ve wished for here.

As for whether or not now the series needs to find another big name to replace her, we don’t think it’s really so simple as showrunner David Hollander heading out to various agents asking them if X actor or Y actor wants to join the show. For a series like this, it needs to be part-driven. We don’t think Ray Donovan needs another accomplished actor to be successful, so how we’d approach it instead is for the team to come up with a great story first and foremost. If you have a really spectacular new role, it makes sense that there will be some people interested in grabbing it! Things sometimes don’t have to be altogether complicated. If you build it, they will come. We think the show’s reputation with veteran actors like Jon Voight and Sarandon will make it appealing to anyone who wants on board and has the time in the schedule.

We certainly would like another formidable actor to go toe-to-toe with Liev Schreiber, but let’s see what sort of parts are created before we really start to get into casting possibilities. There are still so many different ways that the producers for Ray Donovan could choose to go here. Season 7 is filming this year in New York City, and we’ve got a feeling that we’ll hear a little bit more about various roles and castings along the way. Stay tuned.
