America’s Got Talent: The Champions will have wild card acts

America's Got Talent: The Champions

When America’s Got Talent: The Champions does air its finale a little bit later this winter, you will see some familiar faces in it beyond just those who advanced on the first five shows.

NBC has confirmed that there will be some wild-card participants in the finale, which means that they can try to right some wrongs from previous shows, if need be. Personally, we do think it was a mistake not getting Darci Lynne or Courtney Hadwin in the finale from this past episode — though we do think that Deadly Games was the right choice for the Golden Buzzer. We like the idea of having some second chances here, though we’re not sure any wild-card selection for the finale has a real shot of winning the show unless they come out and really deliver a knockout punch in the final show. The real truth here is mostly that so much of this show is subjective that it’s almost impossible to gauge — it’s all about what a group of unknown superfans wants to do with their votes within a given period of time.

Ultimately, we do think that the show’s voting is the most controversial part of it, but the reality here is simply this: It’s hard for the show to do anything too different when you think about when it was filmed. That’s what is somewhat deceptive about even hyping up wild-cards right now — they’ve technically already been selected! We’re sure that they’ve probably been spoiled in some corners of the internet, but that’s not something that we really like to do here.

Given that the whole point of The Champions is to just do something fun with the franchise, what we’re hoping to see here is simply this: An opportunity to put some more entertaining acts through to the finale. More than anything, we just want to continue to be entertained by everything that we get a chance to see. We’re hoping for more variety and, beyond that, a chance to see some different stuff that we don’t get a chance to see virtually anywhere else. This is the fabric of what makes America’s Got Talent as a franchise precisely what it is.
