Bodyguard season 2 still in limbo — why the wait?
So what’s going on here? It’s certainly a good question, but not one that has a real answer at the moment. Instead, all we have is what Richard Madden recently told TVLine and others backstage at the Golden Globes:
“We’re very open to it … You’re going to have to speak to [creator] Jed Mercurio… hopefully he’s going to have some genius ideas.”
What’s so interesting is that there have certainly been a lot of internal discussions about doing it already, but nothing has still materialized. It could be a scheduling issue, but we think more of it is that the BBC wants to wait to announce a renewal until they have both the perfect story and also the perfect timeline.
Coming up with the right story for David Budd’s future is a little bit more complicated than it seems on the surface, mostly because of the fact that he is a reasonably well-known figure by the end of season 1. How can he really work as a successful PPO when he himself is a public figure? How does that really work? We do wonder if he’s going to have to work somewhere else, somewhere that he is not reasonably well-known. The only other option is if he’s tasked with leading a larger security team, and he’s not tasked with being the single bodyguard for an individual person of prominence. There are a lot of questions that the series would have to answer to make the story work … but we don’t think that enthusiasm is going to wane at any point in the near future. Season 1 of Bodyguard proved itself to be an intense, gripping experience that felt very much like watching an extended film. Even though the BBC as a network isn’t necessarily intent on giving every single original series they have an extended run, it’s going to be pretty hard for them to move on from this one. How can they, when you’re talking about a show that has continuously brought this much to the table? We don’t think they’ll be able to.
