Gotham season 5 episode 3 video: The next move for Selina Kyle

Gotham

Moving into Gotham season 5 episode 3, it feels clear that we’re dealing with a different Selina Kyle than we have before. Because of Ivy’s root, which Bruce used in order to save her life, she’s become empowered and, in many ways, she feels more instinctual and proactive. She’s not concerned or worried about anything … and that’s without even mentioning the cat eyes that we saw in the final seconds of this past episode.

So what is the goal for this new Selina? Based on the sneak peek below (via TVLine), she’s interested in doing just about everything that she can in order to find the man responsible for shooting her which is bad news for Jeremiah. Following that, she wants to get justice in whatever way she can. She makes it clear to Bruce that she’s going to do this really regardless of what he thinks, and this seems to be what gets him on board with helping her. His methodology here is pretty clear: He wants to track Jeremiah down, and then have him stand trial for detonating much of the city and causing it to descend into utter chaos. It’s his fault that Gotham has ended up in this predicament and Bruce wants to find a way to make it right.

At this point, we’re not sure how much Selina cares about saving the city. She just wants revenge, and that seems to be why she kisses Bruce at the end of the sneak peek. We think that this may be her manipulating him as much of anything, but that’s as much of a trademark part of this character as almost anything else.

If there is one criticism you can offer of this new Selina, maybe it’s that for so many of Gotham‘s major characters right now (including Selina, Jeremiah, and Ivy), much of their villainy seems to be based on some sort of specific biological change rather than just their character making an emotional turn. Selina’s impacted by Ivy’s root, Ivy’s impacted by the toxins that she took, and Jeremiah was of course driven to madness by his brother’s final gift. It would be interesting if there were more villains who were evil for the sake of it rather than something that was done to them to turn them that way. Yet, we’re also not going to lie and pretend like this is anything other than a super-exciting season that is really living up to the Batman name. This is the comic-book adaptation of this story that we’ve dreamed of for some time and as much as we have enjoyed this show, we are so sad to see it coming to an end when we know there are still so many more stories to tell.
