Happy Together season 2 renewal, cancellation odds following finale

Happy Together episode 12

Following tonight’s season 1 finale, what are the odds of a Happy Together season 2 at CBS? If you’re hungry for more information, CarterMatt has that for you within this piece!

Let’s start off here with a rather-simple reminder that the network already decided to not pick up more episodes of the Damon Wayans Jr. comedy beyond the initial thirteen … and that is rarely ever good news for a show’s future. More often than not, this suggests that more trouble could be on the way and there’s a reasonably good chance that this is the case here.

The most important thing worth noting here (as explained in our the video below — be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more updates) is that the live+same-day ratings matter more than almost anything else when it comes to a show returning. Alas, the live ratings for Happy Together are not exactly stellar at the moment. The show is averaging a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the most important measurement), and that is lower than the majority of other comedies on CBS. While it’s been reasonably steady for most of the season, it’s just never been able to pick up additional traction. Can you say that it needs a better lead-in or more buzz? Maybe, but CBS doesn’t really have patience for a lot of things when they make their decisions on comedy renewals.

If there’s a small reason to have hope for a last-second renewal, it’s that CBS’ comedy lineup is in a state of flux with The Big Bang Theory ending this season and the future of both Mom and Murphy Brown unclear. (We do think that Mom will return after the contract situation with Anna Faris and Allison Janney is resolved.) CBS is going to need to either keep a lot of other comedies on the air moving forward or order a bunch of new ones.

Our thoughts on renewal odds for Happy Together

Unfortunately, they’re still low even with the aforementioned flux in mind. We’re just not getting a sense that CBS is extremely eager to keep the series going, and that’s a shame given that there is a lot of creative potential here. We just don’t think that it’s something that they are altogether eager to do.

Of course, there is still plenty of time one way or another for them to decide — CBS may not finalize the fate of Happy Together until we get around to May. That’s when all major networks set their schedules for the fall season.
