So You Think You Can Dance renewed officially for season 16

For everyone out there hoping to see So You Think You Can Dance coming back onto Fox with new episodes, we come with some breaking news! Today, the network confirmed that the reality dance competition will be back for a season 16 airing this summer. While CarterMatt has been fairly optimistic for a while now that the renewal would be coming, it’s nice to finally have it be official.

It’s true that at this point, So You Think You Can Dance is hardly a ratings dynamo on the network. This past season, after all, averaged just a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Yet, the series is reasonably inexpensive compared to some other reality competitions that are out there and we do think that Fox appreciates that they are able to consistently receive Emmy nominations for some of the show’s choreography. It gives them some awards-show clout even if the series itself doesn’t often get the attention that it deserves.

In a statement confirming the show’s renewal, here is what Fox’s alternative programming head Rob Wade had to say:

“Each season, the talent on So You Think You Can Dance reaches new levels and continues to create the most incredible routines … The hard work and passion that goes into each performance is awe-inspiring. We can’t wait to see what Season 16 has in store and look forward to bringing you a new crop of incredible, inspired and inspiring dancers.”

Meanwhile, head judge / executive producer Nigel Lythgoe added the following:

“I am thrilled that we have been picked up by Fox for Season 16 of So You Think You Can Dance. This allows us to shine the spotlight once again on the incredible choreographic and dance talent across the United States as we search for America’s favorite dancer.”

So You Think You Can Dance has proven itself over the years to be a fascinating farm system of sorts for talent. Many of its former contestants have been employed by Dancing with the Stars, some have went on tour with big-name music superstars, Stephen “tWitch” Boss is now a regular presence on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Jeanine Mason is now an actress whose new show Roswell, New Mexico premieres this month on The CW. We think a big reason for a success rate with dancers on this show is that so many of them are used to working hard without getting that instant burst of fame or attention from critics. They’ve had to give it their all week in and week out to make in this difficult industry and that’s something that is appreciated by any employer.
