Outlander season 4 exec on Roger’s painful story ahead

Outlander

Tonight’s Outlander season 4 episode ended in a way that suggests that Roger is in even more trouble than he has been in to date. Not only is he the prisoner of the Mohawk at the moment, but in the closing minutes we saw him arrive to their home and be tormented by a number of their people.

So where are we going to see this character’s story go from here? Think in terms of one of his lowest points ever. We’re about to witness a guy who doesn’t have all that much of a way forward and despite everything that he’s tried to do in order to keep a positive attitude, we may be at a point now in which such a thing is impossible.

For a little bit more discussion on that very topic, take a look at what executive producer Maril Davis had to say in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“He gave up his chance to go through the stones because he loves Brianna … He’s now questioning that love because for all he knows, who he assumes is her father beat him senseless and sold him off to the Mohawk so he’s having doubts. We explore those doubts further and that for even a nice guy like Roger, a dark night of the soul, what’s he going to do? Is he going to choose to try to get back to Brianna?”

For Richard Rankin fans, what this probably means is that the final episodes of this season are going to end up being the best we’ve seen from him yet. It’s been such a fantastic experience watching this man evolve. At the start of the season, he was a teacher, an intellectual, and not someone we really thought all that much about in terms of his ability to survive these sort of dangerous situations. This journey has brought him strength, resolve, and also an ability to (hopefully) empathize and value what lies in front of him. He knows that he should have never left Brianna and in the event they reunite, it is hard to imagine him ever willingly opting to do so again.

The hard thing here is obviously going to be waiting until next weekend to get a chance to see what lies ahead for the character next.
