Jon Voight not leaving Ray Donovan; Mickey will return in season 7

In the closing minutes of the finale, it felt as though we were going to see Ray’s dad heading back to prison. It’s certainly something that makes a high degree of sense you consider just about everything that’s happened to the character over the years — this is the sort of guy who could very well spend the entirety of the series moving forward in a jail cell! It’d certainly be realistic that way.
No matter what happens to him, though, it is 100% clear that Voight is not going anywhere. Speaking via TVLine, here is some of what series boss David Hollander had to say on the subject:
Jon is always around. No one picked up [Mickey]. He’s sitting there drinking with his family [in the finale’s last scene]. I wouldn’t rule out Mickey not being in prison. It was implied [that he was going to prison] but it doesn’t mean Mickey is going to play ball.
With that in mind, you don’t have to worry about the character’s long-term future — he is still going to be around, though we do still wonder how Mickey is going to make it through this series either alive or somehow out of prison. Even if he stays both alive and free for now, it’s pretty hard to envision a situation in which it stays that way forever. Sooner or later, this guy is going to find a way to screw things up and get himself back in even more trouble moving forward.
As for who is leaving for sure…
The simple answer there is Susan Sarandon. Her character of Sam Winslow was killed off in the closing minutes tonight, something that felt like a long time coming from the moment she released the recording. There wasn’t really a way to envision her relationship with Ray ever being repaired after that. What we wonder mostly now is how the vacuum of power is going to be filled.
