Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12 video: Debate over fighter jets

Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12

On Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12 this weekend, fighter jets could be a key part of the story. In what way? Let’s just say that a defense contracting company is going to put the government in a fairly tight spot.

At the center of the sneak peek below is billions of dollars. In what way? This is the amount of extra money that this particular company is requiring in order to produce a hundred fighter jets. That’s twenty more than the United States initially requested, but the only way to make it economically feasible for the company (apparently) is to up the order to an even hundred. Where this leaves the State Department and the Presidency is a tricky spot where they have to figure out where to get the extra money … or where to use the extra planes.

This may lead to the central conflict of this episode, as it seems as though the US may decide to supply Taiwan with some of these jets — that makes some sense, provided that Taiwan needs then and is willing to pay America for them in turn. However, a tumultuous relationship with China may make this a little bit more difficult, mostly because America doesn’t want to find itself in a position where it ends up in a war over something that it’s doing for the sake of billing the bills and making a contract financially feasible.

While economics may not be the flashiest thing in the world that Elizabeth has had to deal with on the job, we do think that this is an important story for her on Sunday since it’s a really good test for what she’d be up against as the President. We do certainly think that she is getting more and more qualified for the position by the day — after all, foreign policy is a big part of what a President has to be responsible for and we do think that she has a better understanding of that than anyone. We’ve also seen her communicate and form relationships with a wide array of different world leaders since the very start of the show. We do think that she’ll find a way to figure this out, mostly because we cannot see Madam Secretary diving into a massive series of battles with China at this particular point in the season.
