Criminal Minds season 15: Should every character get a spotlight?

Criminal Minds

There’s a chance that you’ve now heard the good news — Criminal Minds has been officially renewed for a season 15! Of course, the bad news here is that this will be the final batch of episodes for the CBS show. As much as a bummer that it is season 15 is going to be the final season, we are happy that CBS is going about this the right way and giving the show a proper ending after so many years on the air. Fans definitely deserve closure on their favorite characters.

There are ten more episodes coming beyond the remaining ones in season 14; these are being filmed this spring, and are going to air at some point during the 2019-20 season. We’re not here to discuss premiere-date possibilities at this point though. Instead, we’re talking about how much time they are going to have to  focus on some of the characters — basically, the reason why season 14 has been so successful so far. We know that the Criminal Minds staff can do a great job making us care about the cases, but making us even more attached to the individual characters brings the show over the top. It’s what allows us to be even more excited about watching every week and this season they have done an exceptional job of bringing us into the personal lives of our team more so then ever before.

Obviously, there’s going to be less time in order to tell a lot of individual stories over the course of just ten episodes. Yet, at the same time all signs point to this being a season chock full of serialized storytelling. Because this is a shorter run of episodes, it gives the writers an opportunity to take on a couple of long-form stories. We think that works as a benefit to a lot of the characters’ personal lives, since there could be some creative ways to loop a lot of them in. Sure, we see people like Krystall or JJ’s family or Prentiss’ new boyfriend every now and then, but how would these people all react to seeing their characters go through one of the worst experiences of their lives? How would this test them or bond them?

Beyond all of that, we do think that it’s just important for some of these characters to get some element of closure and happiness in their personal lives. While we do think that these characters could remain at the BAU, doing what they do best, following the Criminal Minds series finale we certainly do hope that there are some opportunities for them to have happiness. We don’t want to see some of these characters be tortured souls forever.
