The Flash season 5: When is Jesse L. Martin returning as Joe?

Joe West

For those of you who’ve missed Jesse L. Martin as Joe West on The Flashwe do have a good sense as to when he will be back.

Per a new report coming in via TVLine, the veteran actor will be back on the show come episode 15. That means that it’s still several episodes down the pipeline from where we are right now (episode 10 is slated to air on The CW this Tuesday), but it is something to look forward to.

As for the reason why this absence started in the first place, it stems from a back injury that Martin suffered over the hiatus. It’s why he was sitting in the majority of his scenes earlier this season, prior to him going on a medical leave. There were never any plans for him to leave the show outright and the most important thing now is that he’s going to be back for another run of episodes before the season ends. That means we have a chance for some more fun when it comes to West-Allen family craziness. Wrap your head around this — Nora is coming back into the present from the future as a young adult. Meanwhile, Joe and Cecile just had a baby. Basically, Nora is significantly older than her aunt!

We do think that Joe’s importance to The Flash cannot be undersold given that he is one of the main moral centers of the series. He’s one of the few people who has never had any powers and he serves more as a mentor and a guide as to how some other characters can live their lives. We do always worry about the character being killed off, mostly because these are the sort of people who often are on this show. We’ve already seen this with Henry Allen back on the second season of the show. Meanwhile, over on Arrow we’ve also seen it at this point with Quentin Lance. It’s a fairly common practice for these mentors to be taken out when characters start to mature … and we certainly hope that this isn’t going to happen here. Joe just brings so much heart to the show and we’ve missed him.
