When The Orville season 2 episode 4 arrives on Fox in one week’s time, Ed is going to find himself quite a challenge. “Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes” (which reminds us of Douglas Adams in some way) is a story that will feature him separate from most of his crew; not only that, but he is going to find himself surrounded by people who are altogether eager to spend time with him.

Below, CarterMatt offers the official The Orville season 2 episode 4 synopsis with some other information as to what’s coming up next:
Ed finds himself behind enemy lines when he crash-lands on a mysterious planet. Meanwhile, Kelly questions why Gordon wants to take the Command Test in the all-new “Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes” episode of THE ORVILLE airing Thursday, Jan. 17 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (ORV-203) (TV-14 D, L, V)
Can Ed find his way out of this situation in one piece? Well, it’s hard to see The Orville killing off its star and creator not even halfway into the new season. We do think instead that we could be in a situation where Ed needs to be rescued, or at least where he needs to be super-resourceful and plot carefully in the event that he wants to get out of this situation in one piece. That’s going to be easier said than done with where he’s at.
Meanwhile, the question with Gordon and Kelly is a valid one. Why would he want to take the test? Is he thinking about trying to move off of the Orville onto his own ship? These are of course the questions that you’d wonder in this situation. Granted, though, the simple explanation here may just be that he is wanting to keep his options open in the event that he wants to do something different at some point down the road.
No matter how this particular story ends, we do anticipate one thing being more or less the same — we’re probably going to be seeing a little bit of humor mixed in to some high stakes and legitimate danger for some of the characters. We’re hoping that Ed learns something through his journey, and when Kelly, we hope that there are some opportunities for her to learn a little bit more about the crew.
