Criminal Minds season 14 episode 12 review: JJ’s heart-to-heart with mom

JJ

There are a couple of things that we could write about in this Criminal Minds season 14 episode 12 review, but we do think we should start off here with a discussion about the case.

On paper, this one felt like one of the strangest, most-mysterious ones out there given that it revolved around a number of children who were disappearing, Pied Piper style, from their homes without there being too much in the way of evidence as to why. It was fairly fascinating watching this particular case unravel and seeing precisely some of the aftermath on the other side. In the end, though, it became mostly about a story of a father, a son, and pain. While there are so many Criminal Minds cases over the years that have these sort of almost-supernatural premises to them, there is a reasonably explanation in the end.

One of the things that the story did right tonight was present this as a living, breathing town that was reacting rather-terribly to some of the chaos that was going on around them. By and large, this is how we would actually expect such a place to act in this sort of situation where kids were vanishing from homes. The story felt reasonably realistic that way.

JJ’s mom is back

This was the most notable storyline for us in this episode, mostly because seeing JJ’s mother again allowed for an opportunity for the show to dive into some deep, meaningful stuff and really take on some interesting dimensions of this character and some of what she’s gone through over time. We got a good sense as to why her mother resented her always being away, some of her own loneliness, and also how JJ needed to work more to connect with her. Both of these women had to give a little bit, but we do think for JJ there was a lot to be said about how far her mother was willing to go to spend time with her — even make up a story that she needed somewhere to stay temporarily and didn’t have any other options.

CarterMatt Verdict

The JJ storyline offered up some much-needed closure, while the other case of the week brought you some classic Criminal Minds. This season continues to try and offer the best of both words and, as a whole, we think there’s a lot to be excited about if you are a longtime fan. If this is the final season, the writers are at least trying to give us good updates on the people we’ve come to know and love.
