So why are we feeling so good about the Scott Bakula series coming back? Well, a good bit of that has to do with the simple fact that the ratings are, by and large, fairly steady. With a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic on average, this is one of CBS’ most-successful 10:00 p.m. shows — it’s far ahead of Criminal Minds, SWAT, and Madam Secretary in particular. It’s also a part of a huge franchise and has a star who is immediately recognizable.
Beyond all of this, there are some other factors to consider — it’s DVR ratings are good, the show sells well internationally, and it can succeed in a number of other formats. This show has dealt with some exits and some behind-the-scenes headlines, but it’s been able to get to the other side of that and at this point, seems to be going fairly strong. It’s down less than 10% year-to-year and we definitely think that this bodes very well for its long-term future if it keeps that sort of retention moving further into a season 6.
The current renewal odds
We’re almost 100% confident about this one. Pending some sort of dramatic ratings drop there’s almost no reason for CBS to cancel this show. It fits their brand perfectly, it performs well, and it doesn’t require a lot of promotion in order for it to succeed. Maybe at some point the NCIS franchise will start to fade a little bit similar to what happened to CSI, but we’re not anywhere near that point just yet and are more than pleased with how some of these shows are faring.
In particular, who else feels like this is one of the stronger seasons we’ve had? While we do wish that there was a little more story for the supporting characters, the main plotline with Pride has been absolutely fantastic and a thrill to dive into virtually from start to finish.
