Good Trouble series premiere ratings down versus The Fosters

The ratings for the Good Trouble series premiere on Freeform, and we certainly wonder if this performed as well as Freeform wanted.

Following a fairly-lengthy promotional campaign, the spin-off series for The Fosters kicked off with a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic plus slightly over 400,000 live viewers. Note that these ratings are reasonably on par (at least in the demo) with the final season of The Fosters, but down a good bit in total viewers. That means that Good Trouble has a greater percentage audience in the demo, but they’re probably going to need to keep most of this audience in the event it wants to be on the air for a long time moving forward.

There is a pretty substantial caveat to these ratings in that the premiere was available in advance to viewers on the Freeform app and then also via Hulu — with that, we imagine that a number of people probably caught the premiere early and may check it out more down the line. What’s going to be mostly interested in learning now is what the ratings are for episode 2 — that’s often a chance to really gauge the long-term success of a show like this. You need to have some stability almost right out of the gate these days since otherwise, you almost have no way to get viewers watching again.

We think that one of the smart things that Good Trouble has done ratings-wise for most of the season is structured it in a way in which there are some returning The Fosters cast members for almost the entirety of the run. That will start with an appearance from Hayden Byerly in the second episode, and following that, you’re going to have an opportunity in order to see Sherri Saum, Teri Polo, Noah Centineo, and others a little bit further down the line. If you love the original show, there’s a good chance that there will a lot of exciting stuff coming up down the line.

Of course, along the way we’re sure that Freeform is also hoping for a change to recruit some new viewers, people who aren’t familiar with The Fosters in any shape or form, to the series — we don’t think its dependent on anything from that particular edition of the show for its success.
