Last Week Tonight with John Oliver season 6 return date revealed

Last Week Tonight

There’s no more need to question when the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver season 6 return date will be. New segments and assorted comedy bits will be coming your way on HBO next month!

This week, the network officially revealed that Oliver’s late-night series, which films a few hours before broadcast and covers both topical subjects and also features a long-form segment, will premiere on Sunday, February 17 at approximately 11:00 p.m. Eastern time. We do understand that it is a long wait — it’s still a month and a half away! — but at least Oliver tends to do a nice run of shows at the start of the year before going off on a little bit of a break again.

While Last Week Tonight started off as a Daily Show alum hosting a series that felt in a lot of ways similar to The Daily Show, it has carved out a little home doing something that nobody else does — Oliver every show delivers these long-form segments on a singular subject that are often very funny, but also really informative. He’s also able to create viral moments in a way that some late-night hosts can only dream. Take, for example, when he started his own church, or when we kickstarted a campaign to change Donald Trump’s name to Drumpf, which was actually the last name of many of his ancestors.

We anticipate that the show won’t be changing much for the new year, not that it really needs to since it’s got a good thing going. This series performs consistently well for HBO and beyond that, constantly brings them in more credibility in the form of nominations and awards. There was a time in which The Daily Show with Jon Stewart dominated some the Emmys in a way that nobody else really had. There is at least a chance for Oliver to somewhat replicate that success with this show.

Ultimately, don’t expect too much more publicity surrounding the new Last Week Tonight season other than the return date. More than likely, that’s all we’re going to get and we’ll just have to wait and see what the new season is like when it premieres — there’s no guarantee that any of the segments are hammered out just yet because there is such a tendency for things to change quickly.
