According to a new report via TVLine, the series has cast Designated Survivor actor Kal Penn and Stranger Things’ Sean Astin to play characters in an upcoming episode named Dr. Campbell and Dr. Pemberton. These two are physicists who, like Sheldon Cooper, are intent on advancing the field. However, they end up confirming Sheldon and Amy’s super-asymmetry theory on accident, which is probably not the sort of thing that the two are going to love given the time that they’ve spent on it. Granted, we as viewers always do respond to Sheldon showcasing some element of rage and we have a feeling that the same exact thing is going to happen here.

There’s a good chance that you know Penn and Astin from some of their other work, if not for some of what we’ve already mentioned here. Penn has appeared on House and How I Met Your Mother, among a wide array of other things. Meanwhile, we’re always going to know Astin best from some of his work on Lord of the Rings. That’s a big part of the reason to be excited about this gig — The Big Bang Theory has done a rather-great time over the years casting people from within the world of nerd culture.

Will Sheldon and Amy find even greater success by the end of the series?

It’s something that we’re personally hoping for, just because we do like to think of The Big Bang Theory as an optimistic show and we’re hoping that there is an opportunity coming up in order to see some of these people’s career dreams come true. It is nice that so many of them have found love and some element of happiness within their romantic lives, but we are certainly interested in seeing the show expand beyond just that and deliver something a little bit more.

With Sheldon, we didn’t want him to find success right away just because of the fact that it would spiral his ego out of control. However, it does feel now like we’re at a point where if something were to happen with him, he’d actually nurture and appreciate it a little bit more. He understands a little more about struggle.
