Let’s begin here with the start of the episode and the wedding fantasy. Wasn’t that some next-level trolling by Fox to make us think that this was actually somewhat canon to the rest of the story? Certainly feels that way right now. Cole actually woke up from that dream with another woman in Julie, and he tried to feel like he was moving forward with her for the remainder of the episode. As it turns out, though, this was not actually the case. He was still hung up on Natalie, and he ended up getting some emotional support from Erica in the D.A.’s office. He certainly needed a friend at this point, and we certainly think that there’s potential for there to be so much more here … if the two of them really want it.
Based on the ending of the episode, we do think there’s something there — for starters, Cole did save Erica’s life, which kind of makes up for the fact that he slept with Julie in her house at the start of the episode … and he also wore her bathrobe after the fact. (There was a moment between Cole and Natalie at the end of the episode and it seemed to represent the two of them actually trying to move forward.
Where things got a little bit crazy tonight is how Erica and Cole became involved, in one way or another, in a case involving Tom — a dangerous man who just so happened to also be linked to what Trish was working on. Trish didn’t want to stand down from her work given that this was a case and a chance for her to make a big leap forward in her career. She also had a most unusual collaborator here in Leo Getz! Murtaugh was at first rather dismissive of her efforts, but eventually he got more on board and even tried to help her — without him chasing and hunting down the files needed to prove her case, there’s no way that she would’ve gotten out of that courtroom without disbarment.
Is it possible that Leo and Trish could be partners even more down the road? Well, let’s just say for now that Leo is open to it … even if she probably isn’t.
CarterMatt Verdict
Was this a worthy start for Lethal Weapon in the new year? We’d say so, mostly because it did mix together action with some really funny moments — including Leo Getz doing his best to stall in the courtroom and Trish stealing some of Roger’s stakeout supplies while he did his best in order to watch Tom’s every movement.
