The Voice UK debate: Will the new trio twist actually work?

Into the Ark

Going into The Voice UK this season, there was an announcement that certainly took us by surprise. For the first time, trios will be allowed to compete on the show!

At first, it was somewhat easy to brush this off as something that, despite initial hype, really was not all that much of a big deal. Typically duos don’t actually do all that well on this show, so why in the world would we be altogether excited to get these now?

Well, as it turns out, there is a reasonably good chance that these groups could have a larger impact on the series than we would first assume from the outside looking in. Speaking (via the Express) leading into the start of the season, coach Olly Murs revealed that all of the coaches each ended up with a trio from the blind auditions — it wasn’t something that was really planned, but ended up being an interesting byproduct of the blind audition process.

Granted, we do recognize that there is still a different between coaching a trio and then having the British public respond to them. Traditionally, one of the big problems here is that you want to be invested in contestants, and it’s just naturally harder to be invested in contestants when there are more of them. It’s easier on these shows to get to know a single person in the limited amount of time we have.

So why is The Voice UK even introducing trios?

The simplest answer that we can offer to this is that they do want to compete a little bit more against The X Factor, which does offer up a spot for group performances and they, one way or another, have been a part of the show for ages. While The Voice UK isn’t expanding full-on to that level just yet, there’s a clear thought process here that they want to be something a little bit different than what they are and what they’ve been. To date, we’d describe them as an entertaining singing show but also one that still has a little bit of work to do in order to be a credible one. At the end of the day, shouldn’t the goal on some level be to try and find a way to really secure contestants who are going to be a part of the music industry in the long-term? There hasn’t been enough emphasis on that.
