New Year’s Rockin’ Eve: Bebe Rexha performs ‘Imagine’ before midnight

There are a number of things that are traditional for New Year’s Eve and television, but a performance of “Imagine” is high on the list! It’s a staple that we get every single time, and this year it was none other than pop star Bebe Rexha who took on the honors of performing it.

It made sense for Rexha to be the performer for the show this year, mostly because we feel like you always want someone to appear here who is a super-current star and can deliver something new. It’s almost like they, in their own way, are helping to commemorate the year with their performance. It’s also tough to do given the conditions — especially this year with all of the rain.

So how did Rexha do from start to finish? In a word, outstanding. We knew certainly that she could sing, but there was something special about getting to hear her do a song this iconic, with lyrics that mean so much to so much people. It’s a song that will likely have an impact for many more years to come, and we just hope that this can be a moment that everyone is able to sit back and reflect on. It’s one of those few times in order to actually just let the rest of the world slide back into the recesses of your mind. It’s a new year and a chance for new, exciting things. Kudos to Rexha for helping to put all of that into perspective.

One thing that was also very interesting about the presentation of “Imagine” this year was how the performance was used specifically in order to honor journalists and those who have fought hard for the truth this year. This was a lovely thing for Times Square and New York to do this year.

All in all, we’d say that we’d be more than happy to hear Rexha come back and do this in the future — even if the city likes to trade off performers.

One last thing we’ll say — in addition to Happy New Year. It’s always intense to go from this performance to the slow ticking off the clock before the ball drops.
