We’ve made it, alas, to the end of the year for the 2018 CarterMatt Awards, and what a fun run it’s been! We’ve loved seeing some of the different battles and getting feedback from a number of readers every step of the way. It’s been a fantastic year for television and excited as we are for what 2019 brings, it is still sad to see it end.
As is custom with the awards, we’ve saved the top prize for last in Show of the Year. We don’t think that we need to explain further what this is — it’s for the best show of 2018 in the minds of our readers, period. We posted ten nominees and for the past few weeks, voting has been underway.
For the sake of this category, though, the results were never really in doubt: Outlander was selected Show of the Year for the third year in a row. That says a great deal, first and foremost, about the quality of the Starz series. It’s well-acted, well-written, visually stunning, and it throws you right into its world. It tells a love story that is filled with so much emotion and a wide range of components, whether it be action, drama, or even a little bit of humor.
Beyond the show’s quality, it’s also worth noting that Outlander has some of the most-devoted fans in all of TV. This is the fourth win for the show at the awards this year, as it also took home victories in Top Actor (Sam Heughan), Top Actress (Caitriona Balfe), and Best Fanbase. It has been dominant in all of these categories for a little while, which shows that these viewers have stuck with the show from start to finish. Clearly, it’s doing something right year in and year out!
The most exciting thing about Outlander, of course, is that the run is far from over. There are still a handful of episodes left in season 4 and beyond just that, there are at least two more seasons coming up in the future. So long as the series remains every bit as great as it’s been, we’ve got a feeling that you will be seeing it eligible in this category for many more years.
Other results worth noting
While Outlander won the title this year in overwhelming fashion, we do want to get a little bit of love for Lucifer, which finished in second place with just around 20% of the vote. That show had a tremendous 2018, especially since its fans found a way to rally and bring it back for another year at Netflix! Like with Outlander, here’s to hoping for many great things in its future.
