CarterMatt Awards 2018 results: Jake Borelli of Grey’s Anatomy wins Breakout Star

Welcome to another results article for the 2018 CarterMatt Awards! It’s been a fun past several weeks of voting and seeing fan discussions, but we are now nearing the end of the road.

Today, the focus is sharing the results for Breakout Star, a category that we love given that it always offers us a chance to recognize someone who brings something new to the table. This time around, it is none other than Jake Borelli of Grey’s Anatomy.

When Borelli first joined the ABC medical drama back in the fall of 2017, there wasn’t all that much known about his character of Levi a.k.a. “Glasses.” He was one of the new interns and a guy with a penchant for constantly screwing up. He had a number of notable gaffes at the hospital, in addition to the big wedding-cake incident at Jo and Alex’s wedding at the end of this past season. All of that was fun, but it was really this fall when we first started to see the character rise to new heights in terms of his development.

The love story between Levi and Nico, which clearly still has a ways to go, was special because it wasn’t one that you often see. A coming-out story is only something that networks are really starting to focus on now and, beyond just that, there is another interesting component to it in Levi’s nerdy personality. Typically, you don’t get to see characters of his type actually surrounded by other people; geeks on TV are often exiled and included with other geeks. Seeing Levi find himself, and also be around someone in Nico who is developing deep feelings for him, is something that is rare and very much appreciated. Also, there are so many stories to tell. Borelli has done a great job injecting so much heart and relatability into this role; he’s the ultimate underdog, and there is something about this sort of character that is always worth watching and celebrating.

Borelli joins such other Breakout Star winners as Sophie Skelton from Outlander (2017), Alex Hogh Andersen from Vikings (2016), and Quantio star Priyanka Chopra (2015). Congratulations to him and all who voted!

The runners-up

Kudos must be given to Supergirl star Nicole Maines, who finished just a few percentage points behind Borelli in second place. Meanwhile, new NCIS addition Diona Reasonover was in third place. This was one of the closer showdowns that we had in the CarterMatt Awards this year, and that speaks a lot to the crowded nature of TV these days.
