To a certain extent, it does make sense that we could get another episode of the series tonight. Just think about things in this sense. Last week, the show delivered the first part of its “Family Separation” event and that was a rather surprising decision by CBS to begin with. After all, you don’t see many programs air new episodes of things two days before Christmas! Yet, it did turn out to be a worthy decision as the series posted some of the best ratings that we’ve seen from it in a little while.

Of course, with this in mind we would’ve loved to see the show continue things directly this week … but that’s not happening. There is no new episode of Madam Secretary tonight; instead, viewers are going to have to wait until next week before we have a chance to see Part 2 play out.

While you wait…

Why not check out the promo for the second part right now? You can see it below and in it, Elizabeth McCord makes it very clear that after her arrest — which was caused by her protesting children separated from their parents at the border — she will remain in prison until the policy is over and the families are reunited. This is a strong stance to make, and also a challenging one since nobody quite knows just how quickly the government is really going to move in order to make things happen.

We do certainly know at this point that Bess has the support of the entire Dalton Administration and the staff, but that’s not really the issue here. Instead, what she is really up against is a Governor in Arizona that has made it clear that collaborating with the Secretary of State in any capacity is not something that they are potentially interested in doing.

This episode will be where everything comes to a head, and for now we’re at least optimistic that Elizabeth will find a way out of this situation. It’s hard to really imagine a show like Madam Secretary really working when you’ve got the central character locked away for a significant chunk of the season.
