In this particular article, we want to put the focus on a qualified host candidate who we’ve talked about on at least a couple of other occasions in Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay. How in the world has she not hosted the show before now? It remains one of the world’s great mysteries, and it absolutely is an issue that the series should rectify. Not only that, but it’s one that should try and rectify this season— and there are a number of reasons for it.
1. It is the 20th season of SVU – This is a milestone, record-tying year, and we do think that NBC should be doing what they can in order to offer up some more attention for the show. What better platform for it to be celebrated than on the longest-running sketch show on TV?
2. The chance to recruit viewers for SNL – While SVU gets a large live audience a week, there are millions who check it out via repeats and streaming outlets — it was recently revealed to be one of the most-popular crime shows on Hulu for the year. Why wouldn’t you want to get some of those viewers watching out of curiosity?
3. Mariska loves comedy – This is why it would work. If you’ve seen any of the late-night interviews that she’s done over time, her personality differs from Olivia Benson in a number of different ways.
4. TV stars hosting SNL isn’t all that common an occurrence – Typically, there are some reasons why we don’t get a lot of active TV stars as hosts. For starters, NBC may not be too keen to want to promote other networks — but they wouldn’t have to here. Meanwhile, scheduling can be tough and it certainly would be here. They’d have to book Hargitay to host one of the final shows of the season after filming for season 20 is complete, pending some sort of scheduling magic beforehand and that SVU does not bank extra episodes for another season. They’ve done that at times in the past, but there is no official word on a season 21.
5. It creates a larger platform for her Joyful Heart Foundation – Just a mention or two of it during the show could help to bring her cause more attention. We’re in an era where there’s such a sensory overload, and because of that, we don’t want viewers to forget about some of the work Mariska is doing behind the scenes.
