CarterMatt Awards 2018 results: Poldark is the winner of Underrated Show!

Underrated Show

Welcome to the CarterMatt Awards results! Hundreds of thousands of you have voted over the course of the past several weeks in a number of different categories; in this piece, we’re pleased to present some of the results.

This particular category is all about recognizing the Underrated Show of the year, one that is beloved across the far reaches of the internet but, for one reason or another, doesn’t get the awards attention that it deserves. The criteria for this category was fairly loose, other than of course that it had to be a show that failed to receive a nomination at either the Emmys or the Golden Globes. Basically, it’s hard to view a show nominated for Drama Series / Comedy Series as underrated.

The results are officially in, and with that, we are pleased to announce that Poldark is the winner for 2018! The BBC series (which airs on PBS here in the United States) follows such past winners in Major Crimes, The Night Shift, and Hannibal. It won in what was a pretty decisive vote, with more than 77% of readers opting for the Aidan Turner series above any other. Absentia starring Stana Katic is the runner-up, and we highly suggest that you go check it out in the event you have not already.

So why did Poldark take home the prize for Underrated Show? Much of that stems from the show’s passionate fan base and its impeccable storytelling. This is one of those rare series that really does offer up something for everyone, whether it be meaty drama, political discourse, romance, and stellar performances. It’s a beautiful, scene look at characters who struggle to make their life work amidst difficult circumstances. Season 4, which aired earlier this year, was especially trying for some of the characters. Ross Poldark found himself immersed in politics in a way that he had never been before, while Morwenna was forced to endure trauma at the hands of Whitworth and Demelza was forced to confront both the drama of Hugh Armitage and having a husband who was spending lengthy periods of time away.

The one bit of sad news to report on here is that there’s only going to be one more year for Poldark to defend this title, given that the fifth season is being planned out as the end of the road. Provided that the show still meets the criteria in 2019, we have a pretty-good feeling that it will be back in order to stake its claim once more!

Congratulations to all Poldark fans who voted and chose to get the series a little bit of love!
