Bodyguard season 2: Richard Madden on a potential story challenge

Bodyguard episode 4

When will there be a Bodyguard season 2 on the BBC? That’s a question that many people have wondered; in some ways, it feels like a sure thing. The first season was enormously popular and in the aftermath of that, the simple assumption to make is that there is going to be more coming down the line.

Yet, there are still a couple of things to consider here, with one of the biggest being whether or not another season could work. Admittedly, this is not something that we’d thought about on some sort of extreme level, given that we just felt like Jed Mercurio would find a way to tell another story no matter the challenges. Yet, in a new interview with the New York Times promoting his show ahead of the Golden Globes, he talked about how David Budd’s new-found fame could be an issue for him in his attempts to continue to do some of what we’ve seen from him in the series:

There hasn’t been an official announcement [of more episodes] yet. Me and Jed very much want to work together again, so we’re playing about with ideas of where it can go. You have to take in consideration how well-known the character would be because he’s been on television with the bomb vest strapped to him through Central London. So I wonder how that’s going to affect his future career path.

We do think that it’s a good point that Madden brings up here, mostly because of the fact that there would be a number of people in power out there who, more than likely, would want to steer clear of having someone in their employ who was almost as big of a star as they were. It makes them, in turn, more of a target. In the end, you would more than likely need someone who is so impossibly famous and also in admiration of David’s skills that they would hire him in spite of the risks. The only other option is that the character serves as a PPO in another country, somewhere that he would not have been heard of to the same degree.

Our personal expectation / hope is that a season 2 will be announced in the new year, with it coming out at some point in early 2020. We’re not sure that it would be ready before then, but we would certainly be happy in the event that it was.
